TeCh - iPod Touch Said to Account for 38% of All iOS Devices Sold
Posted in | at 2:57 PM
Last week Steve Jobs patted Apple on the back and announced that 120 million iOS devices have now been sold, but according to market research company Asymco, the iPod Touchaccounts for 38 per cent of that figure.
How did Asymco arrive at that figure? It's guesswork, but they subracted the 59.6 million iPhones sold up to the end of the month of June (known because of SEC filings), and the 3.2 million iPads sold. They then figured that around 8 million iPhones and 4 million iPads were sold by Apple between July and August, resulting in 45.2 million unexplained iOS sales—which have been fingered as iPod Touch sales, and 37.7 per cent of that figure Jobs boasted of.
We do know that the iPod Touch is Apple's most successful iPod to date, having taken over from the iPod Nano, but Jobs' claim that "the iPod touch outsells Nintendo and Sony portable game players combined. It's been amazing" isn't looking quite so accurate after casting your eye over PSP and DS sales, as Fortune summed up neatly.

TeCh - New Zealand Earthquake Visualized in Google Earth
Posted in | at 1:54 PM
A strong earthquake that hit Christchurch, New Zealand on September 4 was one of the worst to hit New Zealand in 80 years. No deaths have been reported, but the earthquake caused devastation throughout the region of Canterbury.
Flickr has put up a special page with some of the best user images of the earthquake, which show great damage on the buildings and structures in Christchurch.
Also, Google Earth Blog has posted a neat Google Earth visualization which uses data from Geonet. To see it, you must have Google Earth installed; download this KMZ file, and click the “play” button in the upper-left corner.

TeCh - The Xbox 360's New Official Controller Is a Transformer
Posted in | at 8:08 PM
So, that new-and-improved Xbox 360 controller? It's real. It's silver. And the d-pad transforms, switching from the Xbox's traditional, kinda crappy disc to an honest-to-goodness four-directional d-pad—all you've gotta do is twist it. Now for the bad news.
It's only available as part of a $65 play-and-charge kit bundle that comes out Nov. 9. Booooo. Even the other improvements, like comfier triggers, don't add up to that kind of value in a forced bundle. That said, it seems like we won't see this in other controllers, since Major Nelson mentions that Microsoft has patented the crap out of it. The real test is how it performs in real life—is it actually a better d-pad? We'll have to see.

TeCh - T-Mobile's G2 Gets Its Official Specs and Photos Leaked
Posted in | at 8:05 PM
The first official images and specs of T-Mobile's HSPA+ Adroid G2 have emerged, via CellPhone Signal. We'd seen the phone before (and the specs are no surprise), but these press photos sure beat the crappy quality of last time.
Spec-wise, the phone will (officially) pack a 3.7″ OLED display, 1 Ghz Snapdragon processor, 5 MP camera, and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. [CellPhone Signal viaMobileCrunch]
